How to watch the General Election 2019 results live on TV

Millions of Brits headed to the polls today to cast their vote in the 2019 general election.

It is being dubbed as the most important election of a generation.

All the major issues are on the table for the first winter election in nearly a century with Brexit, the future of the Union and the NHS already proving to be major talking points.

With polling stations closing at 10pm, the majority of the counting will be taking place overnight and throughout most of Friday. If you want to keep up to date with the results, here's how you can watch it on TV.

When will the results be on TV?

Counting started after the polling stations shut at 10pm - the same time the exit poll was announced.

Results from each constituency will come in one at a time, with previous elections typically seeing results come in from the early hours of the morning.

Live TV election results coverage began before the exit polls were released, with the BBC and Channel 4's election coverage starting at 9.55pm.

ITV's election results coverage also began at 9.55pm, while Sky News' coverage comes as part of their rolling news channel.

The broadcasters' coverage will run throughout the night and into the morning, with the BBC's coverage running until 9am for the last election and Channel 4 and ITV broadcasting their programme until 6am.

The Standard will be running a live blog throughout Friday as well.
