The Houston Texans (3-2), ranked at the top of the AFC South, head to Kansas City to take on the AFC West-leading Chiefs (4-1). The Chiefs lead the all-time series 6-4, including a 42-34 win in 2017 and a 30-0 shutout back in 2016 in the AFC Wild Card game. One week after losing, 16-10, to the Panthers at home, the Texans offense exploded to the tune of 592 yards of total offense and a 53-32 victory over Atlanta. Deshaun Watson completed 28 of 33 passes for 426 yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Will Fuller had 217 yards and three touchdowns. Darren Fells added two catches for 20 yards and the other two scores. Houston’s third-down efficiency was crucial to keeping drives alive as they converted on 10 of 13 attempts.
The defense did an excellent job of pressuring Matt Ryan and forcing turnovers. Atlanta was held to a mere 57 yards on the ground. Jahleel Addae led the team with 10 tackles, while Bradley Roby picked up seven tackles and forced a fumble. J.J. Watt and D.J. Reader each contributed a sack in the game.
While Houston’s offense was on fire, the Chiefs offense was uncharacteristically sluggish against the Colts. Kansas City, which ranks second in total offense and first in passing offense, mustered 321 yards and one touchdown in a 19-13 loss vs. Colts. Patrick Mahomes was also sacked four times and the running backs rushed for just 36 yards. Converting on only four of 12 third-down attempts, combined with 11 penalties for 125 yards also proved costly in this game.
Jacoby Brissett and Indy’s pass game didn’t beat Kansas City. The balance and rushing prowess of Marlon Mack (29 carries, 132 yards) wore down the defense. Damien Wilson led the team with 12 tackles and Ben Neiman had 10 tackles. Tyrann Mathieu picked up four tackles and the lone interception in the game. Mathieu and the rest of the defensive backfield will have to be ready for Watson and his arsenal of wide receivers.
