Sunny Edwards in back in the ring after recovering from an ankle injury and will defend his IBF flyweight title this weekend against mandatory challenger from the Philippines, Jayson Mama.
Briton Edwards, 25, last fought in April this year when he dethroned South African Moruti Mthalane by unanimous decision to win the IBF flyweight title and extended his record to 16-0.
Edwards now have his sights set on a potential unification fight in 2022, and hopes to impress by dispatching 24 year old Filipino challenger.
Mama has – like Edwards – won all 16 of his fights, will be looking to continue his unbeaten streak and upset the Brit.
Edwards is wary of the threat that his challenger carries, he told The Ring magazine : “You see time and time again when people go in thinking they’re levels above someone, they usually get shown they’re not.”
“It’s about showing them levels in the ring. I know I’ve got a threat against me. I know Mama is a very dangerous opponent.”
“He’s very heavy-handed, he likes to plant his feet and let big shots go, it should make for an interesting clash of styles. He’s definitely not overlooked or underprepared for.”
When is the fight?
Edwards vs Mama will take place at the Coca-Cola Arena, Dubai, United Arab Emirates with the main card to get underway at around 8pm local time (3pm GMT) on Saturday 11 December.
