Film mogul Jonathan Siegel tasks sharp suited, cinephile gumshoe John Sugar (played with effortless cool by Colin Farell) with finding his missing granddaughter in this stylish new L.A. noir.

Colin Farrell stars in this 8-part comedy as the titular PI, alongside Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell and Anna Gunn, with new episodes now airing on Friday each week.

'Sugar': watching info, streaming, release date

Released: Friday, April 5, 2024
Global stream: Apple TV Plus
Episodes: 8

Noir thriller? Neo-noir? The distinction would be essential to to John Sugar, the charismatic private eye (played by Colin Farrell) hired to find Olivia, a film mogul’s missing granddaughter.

As much movie nerd as he is PI, film is John Sugar's thing. He's a man with taste and artistic passion not just a hard man for hire. He is, according to Farrell, "A tender character... [who] obviously inhabits a world of darkness and criminality and lives alone."

But regardless of which sub-genre of noir you wish to place "Sugar" in, noir it is with all the tropes of the hard boiled detective story - inner turmoil, heavy drinking, sharp one liners and casual violence - front and centre. But what makes John different from the cinematic PIs before him is his self awareness. He's obsessed with film, a motif referenced by quick cut flashbacks to “Double Indemnity” and “The Big Heat”.

It shouldn’t work but it does. The rest looks after itself as a sun-drenched California provides the backdrop and Farrell, channelling Bogart as a 21st century Sam Spade, walks, talks and looks the part.

With secrets starting to be revealed and the façade of glamour and sophistication surrounding the film business beginning to drop away to reveal the ugly truth, it is the suave John Sugar who is emerging from it all as a new and genuine small screen hero.
