Los Blancos beat Diego Simeone’s men 4-1 on penalties when these nemeses clashed in the Spanish Super Cup final earlier in January. They saw out another goalless draw when they met at the Wanda Metropolitano in September.
The archrivals find themselves in quite opposite form ahead of this encounter. Real is defending a 19-match unbeaten streak ahead of its Copa del Rey clash at Real Zaragoza on Wednesday, while Atletico is without a win in four outings across all competitions.
Atleti’s miserable run includes a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Cultural Leonesa in the Copa round of 32, as well as a 2-0 defeat away to Eibar and a 0-0 home draw with Leganes.
Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio could be the only major first team casualties for Zinedine Zidane, who is approaching the cleanest bill of fitness seen among Real’s squad this season.
Atletico has more dire fitness concerns, including striker Diego Costa and centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez, who missed each of the club’s last two upsets in La Liga. Winger Thomas Lemar and right-back Santiago Arias are also in doubt for Saturday’s guests.
10 points separate Real from Atletico in fifth, though defeat could see Simeone’s side fall as far as seventh if Valencia and Real Sociedad win in Week 22.
