No. 19 Michigan (10-4, 1-2) couldn’t keep MSU guard Xavier Tillman or All-American senior point guard Cassius Winston, who scored a career-high 32 points, in check. They created a dynamic one-two punch that Michigan couldn’t control. The Spartans shot 52 percent from the field and an efficient 7-for-15 from beyond the arc. Michigan shared the ball well, with four different players scoring in double digits, including Jon Teske, who had a team-high 15 points, but the Wolverines finished the night shooting just 36 percent from the field.
The season definitely does not look bright for the Boilermakers (9-6, 2-2) after such a humiliating loss. While the Illini have held their own against the powerhouses in the Big Ten, Sunday’s outcome for Purdue is much worse than the team could have expected. Not one player scored in double figures and the team combined to shoot 25 percent (15-for-60) from the field and made just three three-pointers on the night. Purdue’s two Big Ten wins have come against Minnesota on Jan. 2 and Northwestern on Dec. 8.
