There is a reason why the Big Ten is considered one of the deepest conferences in basketball this season. Heading into this week, the conference has four teams in the Top 25. Two of those, No. 22 Penn State and No. 16 Michigan State, will square-off on Tuesday in East Lansing.

Penn State (16-5, 6-4) has been on a great run so far this season with aspirations of making it to the NCAA tournament. Known as a football school, the Nittany Lions look to have turned a corner with head coach Pat Chambers. PSU beat Nebraska 76-64 on Saturday, with Miles Dread leading the way with 14 points. Mike Watkins was also great, scoring 11 points and hauling in a staggering 17 rebounds. Penn State is currently second in the Big Ten in points with 76.9 per game. Forward Lamar Stevens is fourth amongst Big Ten players in points per game with 16.5 points. Penn State’s defense is also succeeding. It is first in the Big Ten in steals per game with 8.52 and first in blocks with 5.57 per game.
Michigan State (16-6, 8-3) is coming off a frustrating 64-63 loss to unranked Wisconsin. Cassius Winston, one of the best players in the NCAA this season, scored 23 points. Xavier Tillman, who the team has relied heavily on this season, had a forgettable game by scoring just seven points when he has averaged 13.5 this season. If the Spartans want to grab a win against the Nittany Lions, Winston will have to have another great game. Chambers said earlier this week that Winston has a great understanding of when he needs to score and when he needs to rely on his teammates. That kind of decision-making is why it can be so hard to defend MSU.
