The defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots head to South Florida on Sunday afternoon for an AFC East date with the Miami Dolphins. Last season, the Dolphins avenged a Week 4, 38-7, loss on the road with a thrilling home victory in Week 14. In what was called the “Miami Miracle”, Ryan Tannehill threw to Kenny Stills, who lateraled it to Davante Parker, then to Kenyan Drake, who scampered 52 yards for the touchdown and a Dolphins, 34-33, victory. Miami will need a little magic if they want to get past New England, who is off to a hot start in 2019.

New England’s quest for a second straight Super Bowl started just as the team had hoped. The Patriots, 33-3, rout of the Steelers at home was impressive. Ageless wonder Tom Brady threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns, two of those coming to Phillip Dorsett, who had 95 yards during the game. Julian Edelman added 83 yards and Josh Gordon made his return known with 73 yards and one touchdown. All this offensive production happened without one of the best wideouts in the league in Antonio Brown. It is unclear if Brown, who has created a lot of drama in the last few weeks, will play.
Defensively, the Patriots held Pittsburgh to 275 yards of total offense and just 32 yards rushing. Identical twin brothers Jason and Devin McCourty had nearly identical performances. Jason picked up seven tackles, while Devin countered with six tackles and an interception. Jamie Collins, Don’t’a Hightower, Patrick Chung and Stephon Gilmore all had six tackles.
The Miami Dolphins are a completely different team than the one that beat the Patriots in 2018. Ryan Tannehill, Frank Gore, Kenny Stills and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil are all gone, as is leading tackler Kiko Alonso. The offense had an abysmal 200 yards of total offense in last week’s, 59-10, blowout at home. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 185 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The lone bright spot may have been Devante Parker, who had three catches for 75 yards. Dolphins fans who thought last weekend’s offensive performance was hard to watch are in for it again against a Patriots team that held Pittsburgh to just three points.
If anyone knows how to game plan against Tom Brady and the Patriots offense it’s Brian Flores. Flores started his coaching career with the Patriots and was with the team from 2004 until 2018, most recently as the team’s linebackers coach. His defensive units were a part of four Super Bowl championships.
