The Old Lady has had to start the season without their new manager on the touchline, as Maurizio Sarri has been sidelined with a case of pneumonia. Assistant manager Giovanni Martusciello will be in charge for the second match while Sarri recovers. The season opener was a successful, if not dull, one. Juve scraped past Parma with a 1-0 result thanks to Giorgio Chiellini’s first-half goal. New signing Matthijs de Ligt was a noticeable absence from the first lineup of the season with Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci the preferred partnership over the world’s most expensive defender. Could the Dutchman be in line for a debut in this high profile matchup or will his time in the spotlight have to wait another week?
Napoli also began their season with a win in a thrilling 4-3 back and forth affair away to Fiorentina. Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon all scored in the high scoring debut. It was the miniature Italian who netted the match-winner in the 67th minute to ensure the winning start to the season.
This matchup sets up to be the tone-setter for the entire season ahead. Many expect Juve to walk away with yet another Scudetto. If Napoli can pull out an early result against the Champions, it could very well set up a competitive title race in Italy.
