Quarterback woes continued for the New York Jets on Monday night against the Browns. Sam Darnold was sidelined with mono and second string quarterback Trevor Siemian suffered a nasty ankle injury. Le’Veon Bell picked up 68 yards on the ground and added 61 more receiving. Robby Anderson led all wide receivers with four catches for 81 yards. Demaryius Thomas, who came over via trade from New England will get to square-off against his former teammates.
Defensively, there wasn’t much to rave about in the team’s, 23-3 loss against the Browns. Baker Mayfield scorched the pass defense to the tune of 325 yards and one touchdown. The secondary had no answer for Odell Beckham Jr., who reeled in six passes for 161 yards–an average of 26.8 yards per catch. It doesn’t get easier when they visit the Patriots, who rank fifth in the NFL in total offense (423 YPG) and passing (310.5 YPG).
The New England Patriots have outscored their opponents 76-3 in two games. In Week 1 they dismantled the Pittsburgh Steelers, 33-3, at home and then followed it up with a 43-0 shutout of the Miami Dolphins in South Florida. It’s only September and many believe this could be one of the best Patriots teams of all-time. Tom Brady threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another against the Dolphins. Sony Michel added 85 yards on the ground and one score.
Defense, defense and more defense. That is what the Patriots bring to the table each week at all three levels from the defensive line to the secondary. They currently rank first in total defense, allowing 246 YPG and second in rushing defense (37.0 YPG). Jaime Collins picked off two passes in addition to five tackles and half a sack against the Jets. In total, the unit had four interceptions. Defensive tackle Adam Butler tallied three tackles and two sacks, while rookie Chase Winovich recorded two tackles and one and a half sacks.
