Whisper it, but we have the seeds of another inter-team battle. A fortnight after recording his maiden Grand Prix victory, Kimi Antonelli has secured pole position for the Japanese GP. Alongside him on the front row is George Russell, and the Mercedes teammates will each have their elbows out. Lights-out is set for 6am BST.

Japanese Grand Prix 2026 Preview
Russell's somewhat cocky demeanor over the past few months betrayed the conviction that the Silver Arrows are way ahead of the pack. What he perhaps hadn't bargained for was his 19-year-old teammate, in just his second season in F1, adapting to the new regulations so quickly.
Following a disastrous start to the season, McLaren are beginning to show their teeth too. Even Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have got more running than Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri so far. The reigning world champion finished fifth in the opener but wasn't able to start in Shanghai, while his teammate is yet to make it to the grid.
However, Piastri is starting from third on the grid at Suzuka, with Norris in fifth. Charles Leclerc is the meat in the sandwich, and those Ferraris are so rapid off the line that he could well slingshot himself into an early lead. Lewis Hamilton starts off Norris' shoulder in sixth. Max Verstappen, way back in 11th, is said to be contemplating his Formula One future.
