Minshew Mania lives on for another week The Jaguars, who started the season 0-2, won their second straight game defeating the Broncos, 26-24, in Denver. Quarterback Gardner Minshew threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns to win his second start in three games. How about Leonard Fournette? The former LSU running back was averaging close to 60 yards per game. Against Denver, he rushed for 225 yards. Despite the offensive production, the Jaguars failed to convert many opportunities into touchdowns, instead settling for four Josh Lambo field goals, with the longest coming from 40 yards away.
The Jaguars rush defense did a decent job of containing the Broncos running backs on Sunday, but their pass defense almost cost them the game. All Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, did make the trip, but was inactive for the first time in his career. Joe Flacco took advantage of the void in the secondary with 303 yards and three touchdowns. Quincy Williams led the team with eight tackles, while Ronnie Harrison added five more and the team’s lone interception. While the Jaguars have seen interest in Ramsey, no deal has been made to trade the Pro Bowl corner, whose list of reasons to miss practice and games continues to grow each day.
In his second start, Allen threw for 232 yards. Christian McCaffrey rushed for 93 yards and one touchdown and added 86 yards receiving in the Panthers, 16-10, win over Houston on the road. Kicker Joey Slye has been clutch for the team making 10 of 11 field goals this year, including three against the Texans with a long of 55 yards. Slye accounted for 10 of their 16 points.
The Panthers defense is ranked fourth in the NFL in total defense, allowing 287.5 YPG, while the pass defense is ranked first (156.8 YPG). Last week, they kept the pressure coming with six sacks on quarterback Deshaun Watson. Shaq Thompson had 12 tackles and one sack. Luke Kuechly, one of the best linebackers in the NFL, added 10 more. Ross Cockrell made the lone interception in the game to go with three tackles.
