Iowa is one of three teams in the Big Ten West division that remains undefeated on the season, joining Minnesota and Wisconsin. However, Saturday will be its first true test of the season against a ranked opponent. The Hawkeyes beat Rutgers, 30-0, in Week 2 and followed that up with a 48-3 win against Middle Tennessee State last Saturday. Quarterback Nathan Stanley completed 17 of 25 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the running game that was on fire. Torren Young led the way with 131 yards, while Tyler Goodson and Mekhi Sarget barely missed the 100-yard mark with 97 and 91 yards, respectively. The team totaled 351 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Tyron Tracy Jr. hauled in three catches for 85 yards and Brandon Smith added six more for 71 yards and two scores.

The match up to watch will be Iowa’s defense vs. Michigan’s offense. The Hawkeyes are third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing an average of 8.5 points per game and are fifth in total defense (251 YPG). Senior linebacker Kristian Welch notched nine tackles against MTSU and leads the team with 31 total tackles on the year. Davion Nixon had seven tackles and one sack in last week’s win. This will be the first of two difficult games on their schedule. The Hawkeyes host 12th ranked Penn State next weekend.

Michigan’s lone loss on the season came in a 35-14 thumping by Wisconsin. The Wolverines bounced back with a 52-0 win over Rutgers. Shea Patterson threw for 276 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Patterson was effective in the red zone with three touchdowns. Running back Christian Turner had 48 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Wide receivers Ronnie Bell (83 yards) Donovan Peoples-Jones (four catches, 62 yards) and Nico Collins (two catches, 59 yards) all had large contributions on offense as well.

While the Wisconsin offense ran all over Michigan to the tune of over 300 yards, Rutgers did not even surpass 50 yard on the ground. The Wolverines defense held them to 152 yards of total offense. Khaleke Hudson led the way with seven tackles, while defensive end Kwity Paye piled up six tackles and one and a half sacks.
