Giro d'Italia 2026 Stage Two

Thankfully stage three was a much calmer affair than the previous two with no crashes and no riders leaving the race, although before the start it was revealed Adam Yates would not be able to continue so UAE have lost three riders in three days. The end of the stage came down to a sprint and it was man in form Paul Magnier who triumphed once more, taking his second win in three days.

The race returns home to Italy for stage four which looks almost identical in profile to stage three so expect and other sprint finish after the 138km between Catanzaro and Cosenza.

Giro d'Italia 2026 Preview

With no Pogačar on the start line, the overwhelming favourite for this year’s race is the other great Grand Tour talent of this generation, Jonas Vingegaard. However, if recent editions are anything to go by, there is no such thing as a nailed-on favourite for this beautiful three-week race, which is guaranteed to spring a surprise.

Much has been made of the lack of top-class competition Vingegaard will be facing, with many of his proposed rivals forced to withdraw before the start due to illness or injury. There will be no João Almeida, no Isaac del Toro, no Richard Carapaz and no Mikel Landa, so the onus now falls on Italy’s Giulio Pellizzari, Australia’s Jai Hindley and the 2021 winner Egan Bernal.

Kicking off with three stages in Bulgaria, the race then returns to Italy, beginning in the south and working its way northwards over the three weeks. The first big GC shake-up will come on Stage 7 from Formia to the giant mountain of Blockhaus. More time will then need to be taken by the leaders in the 42 km Stage 10 time trial. After a few more lumpy stages, the real action kicks off, as always, towards the end of the race in the high mountains of the Alps and Dolomites.

Starting with the savage Stage 14 to Pila, there are four summit finishes in the final week, with the others coming on Stage 16 to Cari, Stage 19 to Alleghe, and the final showdown on Stage 20 to Piancavallo.
