October is here and that brings us the second international window of the season and quite a few high-level matches that promise a lot of quality and entertainment even though they are “only” friendlies. And on Wednesday in Dortmund, we have what could be the best friendly of them all.

Germany and Argentina face-off in a rematch of the 2014 World Cup Final, which still haunts the Albiceleste and is the reason why Joachim Löw remains the German manager despite a poor run of recent results in high-profile matches. Germany’s last big game was a 4-2 loss at home to the Netherlands. It was a game that exposed a lot of the issues the Germans have shown since the 2016 Euros, perhaps their last great sequence of matches despite not winning the tournament. Since then, Löw has brought in new players and a new tactical system, but things just aren’t clicking and his job could be in jeopardy if things don’t go well this week.
Argentina has been soul-searching ever since the heartbreak at the Maracanã, and now things may be headed in the right direction. Even without Lionel Messi, Argentina played two very good games in September, and the dominant, 4-0, win over Mexico was a source of great optimism. Facing a superpower like Germany is a great way to find out just how good this team can be, and although Messi is still out due to suspension, it had Lautaro Martínez and Paulo Dybala to lead the attack. The hope is that the team around those two talents is solid enough to play a good game against the Germans and get a big international result for the first time in a while.
