In the men's singles, Taylor Fritz is seeking a fourth Eastbourne title in six attempts as the big-serving American continues his love affair with the East Sussex coast. Also in the draw is last year's runner-up Francisco Cerundolo, while plenty of eyes will be on 19-year-old Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik, who has been on the rise this season.
There was a huge upset on the opening day of the women's singles, though, as defending champion Daria Kasatkina lost in the first round to Lulu Sun. Sun went deep at the Australian Open, and backed that up at Devonshire Park.
Former Roland Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko and reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova are also in the draws and both overcame British interest in the first round, beating Sonay Kartal and Harriet Dart respectively.
There was better news for Emma Raducanu, who beat Ann Li in three sets to reach the second round. Jacob Fearnley beat fifth seed Flavio Cobolli for the loss of just four games and Dan Evans, 35, rolled back the years with a three-set win over former Wimbledon runner-up Miomir Kecmanovic. Up-and-coming Billy Harris won the Battle of Britain against Cameron Norrie.
