The California Golden Bears travel to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday evening to take on the No. 12 ranked Utah Utes in a big Pac-12 matchup. With these two teams trending in opposite directions, this one could have a big impact on the conference’s bowl eligibility picture.

After a very bright start to the season, Cal has hit a rough patch, losing three straight games to drop to 4-3 on the year. The Golden Bears are in danger of losing their grip on the postseason play if this trend continues. It doesn’t get much easier as they must go on the road to try and knock off a Top 15 team. It’s not hard to pinpoint the source of the Bears’ struggles. They’ve hit the skids since starting quarterback Chase Garbers went down with a shoulder injury. His replacement, Devin Modster, has not done very well in relief. Modster completed just 12 total passes for one touchdown in Cal’s most recent loss, a 21-17 defeat to Oregon State. The odds are squarely against them considering their current run of results, strength of opposition and playing away from home.
Meanwhile, Utah has its sights firmly set on the Pac-12 championship. While it’s still too early to be planning for a spot in the championship game, fate is in its hands. They sit atop the South division with a 3-1 record in the conference. Riding a three-game win streak and a 4-0 home record, logic says they shouldn’t have much trouble improving both of those marks. Starting quarterback Tyler Huntley will start in this one after surviving an injury scare in the Utes’ 21-3 over Arizona State last weekend. The senior out of Florida has nine touchdowns to just one interception on the season and also boasts the fifth best QBR in the country at 87.0.
