Another edition of the Madrid Derby takes place on Saturday as Atletico Madrid hosts Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. As fate would have it, both sides are trending in the right direction and find themselves No. 1 and No. 2 in the La Liga table coming into the weekend.

Diego Costa and Joao Felix were both on target in a 2-0 midweek win over Mallorca to lift Atleti to second in the table. It’s been an up and down start for Diego Simeone’s side, but that’s been the norm across the entire league. After a promising preseason had many labeling them as possible title favorites, Atleti is within striking distance after a month of matches. The loss of Antoine Griezmann and Rodri was always going to be tough, but the team has done a remarkable job finding replacements in the transfer market and the transition process is going about as smoothly as expected. Now the real test comes in the form of their local rivals.
Against seemingly all odds, Zinedine Zidane’s group of superstars have risen to the top of the table. Karim Benzema had been the hot hand of late, but it was Vinisius Junior’s first goal of the season, a great curling effort from outside the box, that led Real to a big 2-0 win over Osasuna on Wednesday. With all the drama surrounding Los Blancos during the summer transfer window and preseason, not many expected them to be a factor in the title race. Yet, here we are with them leading the way early on. Who knows what the future holds for La Liga, but for now it appears they are in the thick of the discussion for who’ll be standing on top of the mountain.
