Do you need a polling card or ID to vote in the general election?

People across the UK are heading to their polling stations today to vote in the third general election in five years.

By the weekend we should have an idea of what the country's next government will look like, led either by Tory Boris Johnson or Labour's Jeremy Corbyn.

Whichever way it goes, the impact on Brexit, the NHS, education and the environment will be huge.

After today, the next general election is not due to take place until May 2024 - theoretically after the UK has left the EU.

Here's what you need to take with you to the polling station to ensure that you can cast your vote today, and have your say in the future of the country:

Do you need ID to vote?

If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you do not need to take any ID to vote.

If you live in Northern Ireland, you do need to take photo ID with you to the polling station. This could be a driving licence, a passport or an Electoral Identity Card.

Do you need to take your polling card to vote?

You don't need to take your polling card with you to cast your vote. As long as you're registered, you just give your name and address to the staff at the polling station.

They will give you a separate ballot paper when you arrive.

How do you find your polling station?

You should have received a polling card which indicates where your polling station is. If you've lost your polling card, however, you can also find your polling station by entering your postcode on the Electoral Commission website.

This will also tell you who is standing in your constituency, and give you contact details for your local electoral services team.

If you're not sure whether you're registered to vote, you should get in touch with your local electoral services team, and they will be able to help you.

If you're not registered, you will not be able to vote in the 2019 general election.

Uber is offering free rides to the polling station for wheelchair users, the elderly and people with disabilities.

What time are polling stations open?

Polling stations are open between 7am and 10pm today. As long as you are in the queue at the polling station by 10pm, you will be able to cast your vote.

If you have a postal vote that you forgot to send, you can hand it in at your local polling station and it will still be counted.
