In the space of three hours, you’ll learn how to operate your digital SLR camera, and receive tips on how to become a more creative photographer. Plus, you’ll have the chance to receive feedback on your work from David, enabling you to improve your photography skills and create images to be truly proud of.

- An overview of the basics of creative photography
- Understanding light, exposure and depth of field
- How to capture motion in your images
- Selecting the right lens
- The key things you need to know about aperture, shutter speed and film speed
- How to achieve the results you want in a photograph
- Q&A – an invaluable opportunity to ask David any questions you have about photography
Please note this class is mainly theoretical, although there will be opportunities to practice using the settings on your camera during the class
What to bring
- You’re encouraged to bring along your own digital SLR or manual SLR camera to the class, along with any lenses you might like to use
Course preparation
- Ahead of the class, you’re invited to submit one or two of your own photographs – or images by other photographers – along with any specific questions you might have. David will use these questions and images to inform his teaching on the day
- It’s not essential to submit photographs in advance, but if you would like to get involved please email your images to our team at masterclasses.support@theguardian.com by 10 January 2016, 5pm; or as soon as possible if you book your ticket after this date

David Levene has worked as a photographer for the Guardian since 2001. His awards include winning first prize for Live News Photograph of the Year at the Press Photographers Awards in 2010, for his work documenting the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
