Companions in The Outer Worlds 2 are crucial combat buddies who bring their expertise to the battlefield in different ways.
For example, Niles has an ability that taunts foes to keep their attention on him so you can deal big damage, while the robot VALERIE can burst heal you and keep you alive. Finding upgrades for your companions makes things way easier as the game's difficulty ramps up, so they're important in your quest.
Here's how to upgrade your Outer Worlds 2 companions so they can maximize their effectiveness in helping you along your journey.
How to get companion upgrades in Outer Worlds 2

Companions have two main types of upgrades, Perks and Mods via Companion Mod Kits. Perks are acquired at levels five, 10, 15, 25, and 30 as you level, but Companion Mod Kits bring powerful buffs to your companion's armor and damage-dealing capabilities.
Perks function similarly to your own Perks, offering different buffs and gameplay changes and you can choose one of two options for each, while Companion Mod Kits directly affect their weapons and armor. For example, Niles' mod kit can change his weapon damage to acid or electric, making him more formidable in combat alongside you.
Once you have a Companion Mod Kit, head to a Workbench and select the Party Upgrades option. Here, you will find a screen like the one above, allowing you to choose which upgrades to unlock. Choose wisely, because they can't be changed.

Companion Mod Kits are found throughout the game via different paths, but the first one for Niles is unlocked by finishing the Pressing Cares quest on Paradise, which is a Companion Quest. Companion Quests are marked by your companion's face next to the quest title in your journal, so completing these is a good first step on finding more Companion Mod Kits.
Companion Mod Kits also alter the appearance of your companions. I selected the electric armor upgrade for Niles and he got the cool metal mask that you see in the image at the top of this article.

These quests function like Loyalty quests in Mass Effect or other RPGs where the upgrades are tied to your relationship with the companion. So far, Companion Mod Kits don't necessarily seem to be tied to these quests, as we've had trouble finding additional ones in the review period. This could be a bug, however, so stay tuned.
