The Inside Out-focused Emotional Rescue update has introduced some exciting new characters to Disney Dreamlight Valley. One of the villagers you can add to your valley is Joy, but recruiting her takes a bit of work.
Once you have Joy in your valley, she has plenty of quests you can tackle to level up your friendship and earn special prizes. She's not a character you want to miss, so if you're hoping to add her to your village, here's how to unlock Joy in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

How to get Joy in Disney Dreamlight Valley
You can unlock Joy by entering the Inside Out Realm and working through a few quests she gives you. There are quite a few steps you need to get done before she's willing to join your village, so here's a full breakdown of how to unlock her.
- Unlock the Inside Out Realm.
- Complete the Emotional Rescue quest.
- Complete the Out of the Blue quest.
- Complete the Dream On! quest.
Unlock the Inside Out Realm in Disney Dreamlight Valley
The first step toward unlocking Joy is gaining entry to the Inside Out Realm. It costs 15,000 Dreamlight to unlock, but you also need to tackle a few extra steps before you can explore inside.
Interacting with the door causes a memory to pop out from it. You need to restore some joy and sadness to this memory, which can be done by:
- Cooking any dish that makes you happy. Visit any cooking station around the valley and cook up any dish you like. I cooked Aurora's Cake for this one since it's one of my favorites, but any dish, even one-star ones, will count for this task.
- Taking a picture of a Night Thorn in the valley. Find any Night Thorn growing around your valley and use your Phone to snap a photo with it.
Once both of these tasks are complete, return to the Inside Out Realm door to restore the memory and venture into this new location.
Complete the Emotional Rescue quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Your next task is to work through the entirety of the Emotional Rescue quest. In this mission, your primary goal is to help Joy fix the console in Headquarters by finding missing pieces scattered around the Realm. Here are all the key steps in this quest.
- Unlock the Inside Out Realm. The task you previously completed is an essential part of this one.
- Find all missing console parts. This includes Curiosity Sliders near the orange couch, an Envy Button near the dark purple door, Broken Caution Connectors on the ground in the tunnel, Broken Caution Grips close to the crafting station, and a Curiosity Adjuster near the ramp in the back corner of the room.
- Craft the final console part. The Broken Caution Sliders can be crafted using the Broken Caution Connectors and the Broken Caution Grips.
- Repair the console. Bring all the parts you found to the console to fix it.
- Solve the flipper puzzles. Work through the two puzzles presented to you by Joy.
- Find Mind Worker safety gear. Grab the Mind Worker safety gear from the storage unit behind the tunnel and equip the clothing items you unlock.
- Enter Long Term Memory. Use the elevator in the middle of the room to go down to Long Term Memory and officially finish the Emotional Rescue quest.
Complete the Out of the Blue quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Next, you need to track down Sadness in the Out of the Blue quest. To do so, you must:
- Solve some flipper puzzles. To proceed through the Long Term Memory maze, you need to solve all puzzles blocking your path forward. As you solve each flipper puzzle, more pathways unlock, so you can explore new areas.
- Find Sadness. She's trapped behind a flipper puzzle near the very back left end of the maze, so just keep working through it until you find her.
- Find four Piano Lesson Musical Memories. Scout around Long Term Memory to find bright yellow music notes hovering near the wall. Each time you find some, interact with them to reveal a Piano Lesson Musical Memory. Once you bring them back to the entrance, the Out of the Blue quest will officially be complete.
Complete the Dream On! quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley
The final mission you need to get done is Dream On!, which asks you to help Joy and Sadness put on a Dream Production for Riley. To complete this task, you need to:
- Enter Joy’s Dream Productions space. Follow her and Sadness over to the right end of the console and enter this new region through the sparkling space that appears there.
- Decorate the stage with the right furniture. Use Furniture Mode to set up the stage with some classy items, including the globe, fireplace, and potted tree.
- Dress up in elegant clothing. Choose any three clothing items that are tagged as elegant to dress up for the performance.
- Place Joy and Sadness's home. Put the outline down anywhere in the valley, then pay Scrooge McDuck 10,000 Star Coins to build them a place to live.
- Gather colorful materials for the light stick. Acquire and bring Joy one Topaz, one Apple, one Seaweed, one Blue Falling Penstemon, one Carrot, and one Onyx. As soon as you give her these items, the Dream On! quest will officially be complete.
Joy joins your village as soon as you place her house down in the valley in the Dream On! quest, but it's best to finish the one extra step that comes after it to fully wrap up her storyline. Now that she's an official villager, you can work on recruiting Sadness next.
