How to switch off Instagram’s suggested posts in your feed

Instagram is an ideal platform for keeping up with your friends, family, your favourite celebrities, and can be a great source of inspiration, with millions of accounts right at your fingertips.

While users can search for and follow users, locations, hashtags, and more, sometimes Instagram‘s suggested post feature tries to help out by suggesting particular posts that they think you may be interested in. At a first glance, this can be a way to discover brilliant new content, from users you may not have found otherwise.

But many users have been left complaining about the suggested posts saying most of them don’t match their interests and are not what they came on Instagram to see. Plus, these suggested posts can clog your feed, making it more difficult to see posts from accounts you actually follow.

The suggested posts feature is part of a rollout of new features that Instagram said it will pause, following backlash online from users and celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Chrissy Teigen.

However, on April 26, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that 40 per cent of the information users see while scrolling on Instagram is chosen by the platform’s AI-powered algorithm based on the people, groups, and accounts it thinks you will enjoy.

If you have been trying to find a way to block these suggested posts from your feed, here is what you can do.

How to turn off Instagram’s suggested posts in your feed

When you see a suggested post in your feed, click the X on the top right-hand corner above the post.

A message will appear that says “Post hidden. We’ll suggest fewer posts like this.”

You’ll then have four options to choose from:

  • Don’t suggest posts related to [topic or user]
  • Snooze all suggested posts in feed for 30 days
  • Don’t suggest posts from [user]
  • This post made me uncomfortable

Select “Snooze all suggested posts in feed for 30 days,” and you won’t see them for a month.

After a month, suggested posts will appear again, and you’ll have to go through these steps once again.

But it’s a quick process, once you know how, and it’s worth it to free up your Instagram feed again, making space for the content you really want to see.
