How to turn fake crowd noise for Premier League games on and off

Empty stadiums, five substitutes per side and socially distanced substitute benches.

These are just some of the changes brought in by the Premier League, as top flight football resumes after a 100-day break.

The lack of supporters in the ground means games are being played in eerily quiet conditions.

But for fans watching at home, there is a way to recreate the atmosphere that everyone knows and loves.

Sky Sports is showing 64 of the final 92 games of the Premier League season, and is making fake crowd noises available on its broadcasts thanks to its new Sky Sports Crowd feature.

Sky has said its new feature will be on Sky Sports Main Event for 20 of its next 22 Premier League matches.

The feature switches to Sky Sports Premier League for Burnley vs Watford (June 25) and Bournemouth vs Newcastle (July 1).

Fans can choose between added enhanced crowd noise on Sky Sports Main Event, while Sky Sports Premier League shows games with just stadium noise. Both channels include match commentary.

So if you don’t like one sound, you can simply switch channels.

Sky Sports has teamed up with EA Sports, developers of the FIFA video game franchise to create an artificial atmosphere.

EA Sports is using its archive of 1,300 chants and crowd noises to create an artificial atmosphere.

The partnership means fans can hear loud cheers when home teams score or are awarded penalties, while boos ring out when a decision goes against them.

Artificial crowds were first used in the Bundesliga in May.

Gary Lineker has described the technology as “bloody clever”, tweeting: "It’s actually bloody clever this crowd noise technology. Instant cheers at goals, louder for home goals etc.. very smart and an improvement.”

EA Sports FIFA audio artist Paul Boechler told Sportsmail : "It varies for each club, but in total we're providing over 1,300 assets that equates to roughly 13 hours of audio content. "From that content, we find the best bites and assets that will be integrated into the broadcast.”
