How to switch on Instagram dark mode

Instagram is finally getting dark mode.

It’s been one of the most requested features over the last few months and it has now been added to the app.

As the name suggests, dark mode changes the background colour of the app window to black, making it much easier on the eyes - particularly when using your phone in the evening, the Mirror explain.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced the update on Twitter.

He wrote: “Starting today, you can use Instagram in dark mode on iOS 13 or Android 10. Turn dark mode on your phone to try it out.”

Annoyingly, there isn’t currently a way to toggle the feature on and off within Instagram’s settings, and instead, users have to opt for a system-wide dark mode to access the feature within Instagram.

How to get dark mode on Instagram

To try the feature for yourself, make sure you’ve updated to the latest operating system - Android 10 or iOS 13.

iPhone

1. Pull the control centre up on your iPhone

2. Long-press on the brightness indicator

3. Select dark mode from the toggle options to enable it

4. You’ll see the colours change on your iPhone - and within the Instagram app itself

Android

1. Go to Settings, then Display

2. Tap Advanced, and select Dark from the Device theme menu

3. You’ll see the colours change on your iPhone - and within the Instagram app itself
