How to stop your car freezing over using little-known sock hack

Drivers in Glasgow are facing plummeting temperatures this week with lows of -2C set to cool down the city tomorrow (March 10).

And in addition to the cooling conditions, snow is forecast, with the Met Office having issued an updated yellow weather warning urging locals to stay safe when heading out. The chilly temperatures mean that drivers could face tricky conditions on the roads as well as frozen cars.

But to help motorists, automotive experts at Peter Vardy have shared a clever hack that uses socks to prevent your car from freezing over. Yes, socks.

Peter Vardy has examined car maintenance-related hashtags on TikTok to reveal their top five winter car hacks that drivers should be using this week.

So if you're after quick hack to get going in the morning and on the roads, here are some handy things you could try using common household items.

1. Cover your windshield wipers with long socks to prevent them from freezing over

Use long socks to cover your windshield wipers to stop them from freezing over on cold nights will save you time in the morning rather than waiting for it to defrost with Peter Vardy recommending that the thicker the socks the better and ensure they fully cover your wipers.

2. Stuck in ice or snow? Try placing your rubber floor mats underneath your tyres

If your car gets stuck in snow or ice, grab the rubber floor mats from your car and place them under the tyre that is slipping for traction.

This should help you get over the tricky spot so you can get away. But don’t forget to collect your rubber mat before leaving the area.

3. Use shaving foam to prevent windows from fogging up

For this hack, you will need shaving foam and a microfibre cloth.

To prevent fog, simply put a generous amount of shaving foam onto the cloth and wipe it on your windscreen - both inside and out - until it disappears.

This should prevent your windows from fogging up in the colder months.

4. Do not turn your heating on straight away

As the weather gets colder, let your car run for a minute or two before you start driving and turn the heating on.

The reason behind this is that when you turn it on, the heating gets pulled from the engine and if the engine is cold, it is unable to get any heat from it and ends up blowing more cold air into your car.

5. Shaving foam hack to clean mud from your car

Getting dirt and mud on your car can be a real pain.

This mud from shoes and clothes will transfer into your car however this hack could save you on getting your car cleaned professionally.

Simply take a microfibre cloth and apply shaving foam to it and then rub this on any muddy patches inside your car. Rub this in until it disappears and let it sit for ten minutes before wiping the car seats clean with a damp cloth. Once the area is dry it should look as good as new.
