I am currently sorting through being very confused about the launch of the Vex Invasion, which I thought was going to be live after the world’s first raid clear, not as the raid launched, but here we are.
When non-raiding players log in, they will get a cutscene and an immediate escort to the Tower to talk to Ikora, who has become our de facto Vex Invasion bounty and quest person. She will tell you to get your butt to the moon and have a bunch of bounties that you can get that have to do with the coming event.
But here’s where things get confusing. Once you head to the moon, you’ll see a giant Vex Invasion symbol, but it asks you to complete the “Eyes on the Moon” Requirement first. And if you’re just riding around the moon randomly, chances are you will probably only see a handful of Vex rolling around, 3 or 4 at a time, and no Gate Lords. Not great for a 100 Vex kill, 3 Gate Lord quest you’re given.
Turns out what you’re waiting for is a new sort of public event. In one of three main D1 moon zones, Archer’s Line, the Hellmouth or Anchor of Light, if you wait around long enough you will see a giant portal of light in the sky, and Vex will start swarming out of it, along with a minboss Gate Lord. The idea is to kill him before he escapes, and once you do this, another gate will spawn in the area, and then another. Kill all three and you get a chest. Enemies here will drop materials that have to do with this event. (Update: if you’re having trouble getting an event to spawn, don’t just sit in one place and wait, keep driving around between the three zones, mainly just between Archer’s Line and Anchor of Light)
I personally soloed the Vex and three Gate Lords my first attempt because for some reason, my instance didn’t want to put any people in the zone with me. I am 920 and it wasn’t exactly easy, but it was at least doable. The problem is that there is no indication this is what you’re supposed to do so you just sort of have to stumble upon these events randomly. There is no icon in the map or countdown or anything, just white text that appears and then the gates will open. But this doesn’t happen very often. It’s sort of like an “enemy is moving against each other” thing where it just happens.
This is how you beat the first part of the question. I am currently like 20 Vex kills away from doing it, but then you move on to another step and I believe this is the eventual road to the Eyes on the Moon completion which will then open the Vex Offensive event itself from the director. I will update this article with more steps as I complete them, so check back here for further info. Sorry to have this be incomplete for now but I wanted to help people with this first part.
Update: Okay, literally finishing this step gets you the Eyes on the Moon step which has you going to Eris, and then the next step is to complete the Vex Invasion from the director. Going to do that now.
