How to spot Comet Neowise tonight as it reaches peak brightness over Scotland

The Neowise Comet will light up the sky in Scotland tonight before it disappears for 6800 years.

NASA discovered the Comet Neowise, which they named C/2020 F3, in late March and it will come closest to Earth Thursday before moving away.

Skywatchers will be able to see it best on Thursday (23 July) evening as it reaches peak brightness and light up the skies across Scotland.

It will be visible throughout July but NASA say once it's gone it is unlikely to return for at least another 6000 years.

How to spot the comet and where to look

The comet should be visible below and just to the right of the most famous constellation in the Northern Hemisphere's sky, the Big Dipper, Space.com explains.

On July 25, it will be directly under it - before continuing to move west and slightly upwards.

It will be at its most visible around 3:30am, but some people have been able to see it from around 10pm.

Experts from Space.com advise: “Your clenched fist held at arm’s length measures approximately 10 degrees in width. So, on these mornings, the head of Comet Neowise will appear about ‘one fist’ up from the north-east horizon.”

Don't worry if you don't plan to stay up that late, we'll bring you the best pictures of the comet on Friday.
