And the people rejoiced, because the most annoying challenges in Fortnite were gone, or at least seemed to be gone. Ever since Season 3, Fortnite’s weekly challenges have always contained an identical challenge in a different location: “search 7 chests in X.” They’re pretty universally loathed for a few reasons: one, they’re just not that interesting. You open chests every match, this just asks you to trot over to a particular location to do so. In addition, they have a way of concentrating players in a single area of the map: combined with the other challenge that asks you to eliminate 3 players in a given location and you’ve got a weirdly skewed match with a huge number of players dropping in two locations, three if you cound the always popular Tilted Towers. This week’s challenge is a little different, however, and it’s a great change. Here’s how to solve the new multi-stage chest quests.
You’ll notice the change as soon as you look at the challenges: they now say “search a chest in Pleasant Park” as “stage 1,” with five more stages to follow. So you have to go to Pleasant Park and grab a single chest to keep moving with the challenge: just drop on a roof and bust through, odds are you’ll find one.
After that, there are four more stages:
- Retail Row
- Greasy Grove
- Lucky Landing
- Paradise Palms
You’d be hard pressed to do all of these in one match, but you might be able to knock out two if you’re trying. A better way to do it, however, would just be to use it to structure five matches by starting in a different place each time. It adds a little variety and lets you complete other challenges while you’re at it.
This does what Epic wants location-specific challenges to do: it encourages people to explore the map and vary up their drop zones. But it does so in a much more effective way than the old “search 7 chests” challenges and prevents that always-annoying early week mob. Let’s hope this is a permanent format change, because I like it.
