Contactless card payment changes come into force today - here's how to set your own limit

Changes are coming into force today (October 15) for anyone who uses contactless card payments.

Previously contactless shoppers were limited to spending £45, with all charges over that requiring the individual to enter their PIN.

As of today, the limit is more than doubling and shoppers can now make payments of up to £100.

The limit on contactless payments was raised to £45 last April due to the pandemic, in a bid to reduce people touching the key pads at supermarkets.

Some shops may take longer to introduce the new limit if their terminals need to be updated to accept the changes.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed the change in the March budget stating the change would make it "easier than ever before for people to pay for their shopping".

Despite the good news for some, the move has sparked concerns that thieves may be able to spend more on stolen cards. It has prompted action from some banks who are now allowing customers to set their own limits on what they are allowed to spend via contactless payments.

Lloyds Banking Group, which runs Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, now have a new feature allowing individuals to set their own contactless limit between £35 and £95 or alternatively disable contactless payments altogether.

Whilst Starling Bank will let users set their own limit in £10 increments or turn off contactless, customers at banks including Barclays, Metro Bank, Nationwide, Natwest, RBS, Santander and TSB will not be able to set their own limit.

However if an individual is worried, they can turn their contactless payments off completely.

If you are concerned about fraud, you can make the changes through your banking app, online or via your branch - each varies depending on who you are with.
