How to set up a newly unwrapped iPhone this Christmas

A number of lucky Scots are likely to have unwrapped a new iPhone for Christmas this morning.

Three new models of Apple’s signature phone were released over the past couple of years, including the iPhone 13 and SE editions - while slightly older versions are still popular.

If you’re new to the world of iPhone’s you’re probably wondering what most of the features are. But if the iPhone you’ve been given is an upgrade, you’ll be seeking to move your existing data over to the new version.

There are a number of steps that you must go through either way to ensure you’re getting the best out of the device straight away.

Here is a guide on how to set up your newly unwrapped phone.

Transfer from old iPhone to new one

Scots should back up their existing device - such as photos, videos, contacts and apps - and have details of their Apple ID and password at the ready.

You should also remove your existing SIM card from your old phone and transfer it over to the new one. If your new device requires a different SIM card than what you have then you should phone your mobile provider.

You can back up the data from your previous phone by connecting it to a computer or through the iCloud feature.

The data can then be transferred to your new phone by plugging it in to the same computer or by accessing it through iCloud.

Transfer from Android to iPhone

To move data from your Android phone to an iPhone is a fairly simple process.

You must firstly ensure that the wi-fi on your Android device is on and plug it into charge. Your new iPhone must also be connected in this way.

When setting up the iPhone’s operating system, tap the “move data from Android” feature. Then you should access the Android device and open the “Move to iOS” app. You can access this app through the Google Pay Store or by scanning a QR code on your iPhone device.

A six or ten digit code will appear on your iPhone, which you should enter into the Android when prompted.

Then you will be asked to select the content that you wish to move over to your iPhone.

Setting up your first ever iPhone

Firstly you’ll be required to turn the iPhone on, which you can do so by holding the device’s power button until you see the Apple logo.

You will then be asked to choose the language you require and the country and region the phone is based in.

If you have another device you can use it to automatically set up your new phone with Quick Start - you’ll then be asked to follow instructions on screen.

Scots who do not have another device should select “Set Up Manually” to continue.

You will need to connect the phone to the Wi-Fi, mobile network or iTunes on a laptop or computer to continue setting up the device.

On some iPhones you will be able to use Face ID and Touch ID to unlock your phone - you will be given a series of prompts or you can set up later in settings.

You can also use a six-digit passcode to help protect your data.

Scots must also have an Apple ID to set up their phone - if you’re unsure on these details then you can click “forgot password or don’t have an Apple ID”.

Further along the set up process, you can also turn on automatic updates, set up Siri and other services.

And then tap the “Get Started” icon and that will be you, good to go.
