How to see what items your local foodbank needs during coronavirus lockdown

Donations to foodbanks have dropped due to the coronavirus outbreak - leaving volunteers struggling to keep up with demand.

While eligible parents can still get free school meals from the government even though schools have closed to most children, many families are still struggling to put food on the table.

The quality of the free school meals being provided has also sparked controversy, meaning foodbanks are still providing a lifeline for so many families in the south west.

But with people told to stay indoors to slow the spread of COVID-19, foodbanks are seeing their supplies dwindle.

Vital products such as tinned foods and coffee are running low, as shoppers strip supermarkets shelves bare to stock up during the pandemic.

So Bristol Live's sister site InYourArea has launched a tool for people to use to see what their local foodbank is in short of.

What foodbanks need year you:

In co-operation with charity Give Food, which delivers to food banks nationwide, the widget will allow users to input their postcode and see precisely what provisions their nearest volunteer-run sites are short of.

Jason Cartwright, founder of Give Food, said: "Even before coronavirus became a problem food banks were experiencing unprecedented demand, and the recent situation has created a real crisis.

"We're proud to be able to help InYourArea augment their hyperlocal service to help their users to discover what food banks near to them are requesting."
