Two spaceships and 57 satellites will be launched into space from America this afternoon and people around the world should be able to catch a glimpse from outside their homes.

SpaceX, the US space transportation company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, is behind the project and rockets will take flight from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at around 4.18pm (ET) today.

The mission is the 10th trip by the company as part of its work to set up a constellation of satellites known as Starlink, which will beam wi-fi signals to earth, providing better connection.

Nasa Kennedy Space Centre said: "The goal of Starlink is to create a network that will help provide internet services to those who are not yet connected, and to provide reliable and affordable internet across the globe."

When will the rockets be visible in the uk?

The space station tweeted that the rockets will be launched at 4.18pm (ET) which means people in the UK will need to be looking at the sky at 9.18pm (BST).

You can also watch the countdown in real-time on SpaceX's YouTube channel.

There are also a number of apps for Apple and Android users that can follow the path of the Starlink probes.

The launch was meant to go ahead earlier in the week but it was pushed back due to weather conditions.
