How to see the Orionid Meteor Shower 2019

A spectacular meteor shower is set to reach its peak tonight.

The Orionid occurs in mid autumn every year and is named for its location to the constellation Orion.

It is made up of debris from Halley's comet, which only passes earth every 75 years and is not likely to be seen again until 2061.

Amateur astronomers can catch sight of these shooting stars, which can be seen with the naked eye.

When is the Orionid Meteor Shower?

The meteor shower takes place between October 2 - November 7 this year.

However, the peak will be on the evening of 21 October, at which point there’s estimated to be up to 20 meteors per hour.

How and where to watch the Orionid

The Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) says the Orionid Meteor Shower "is one of the best known and most reliable meteor showers in the annual calendar, visible from across the globe."

To get the best chance of seeing the spectacular, keep away from light pollution. And the best time to look up is about 9pm.

So it’s best to go as far away from busy cities, get wrapped up warm, and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

The skies need to be clear too, with very little or no cloud coverage.

What is the weather forecast?

Obviously, no matter where you are hoping to spot the shower, the skies need to be clear.

While it runs across a number of days, tonight (October 21) is the peak and it is not looking promising for Merseyside.

The Met Office have forecast an overcast night with cloud cover obscuring the astronomical event.

But it does run until November 7, so you still have a chance to get a glimpse of the meteors.
