How to see Santa flying home over the UK in the sky on Christmas Day morning

Families with young ones at home can make this Christmas Day even more magical - by catching a glimpse of Santa's sleigh in the early morning sky.

It means an early start but changes are mums and dads with children will already be up unwrapping presents at that time anyway.

You will have two opportunities to see Santa's sleigh over Greater Manchester and the UK on Christmas Day morning - which will appear as a shining light that will look like a moving star. The first will be at 5.37am for three minutes - appearing again for six minutes at 7.10am as Santa makes his way home.

Of course, it's not really Santa but in will be fact the International Space Station (ISS) moving across the sky. The ISS appears as a bright moving object due to the Sun's reflection.

Whether or not you get to see it will of course depend on the weather and the sky being clear. It should still be dark enough to spot as the Sun does not rise on Christmas Day until 8.05am.

There are other opportunities to spot the ISS throughout the year - but of course you won't be able to use the Santa's sleigh line.

You can view the times during the year here.

ISS sighting times (or Santa's sleigh) on Christmas Day:

  • Sunday, December 25, 5.37am for three minutes. It will appear in the south east
  • Sunday December 25, 7.10am for six minutes. It will appear from the west
