How to save your dog's life by giving it mouth-to-mouth: Vet demonstrates important doggy first aid

They're part of our family and a man's best friend. If you're a dog-lover, there's probably not a lot you wouldn't do for your pet.

While mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on your pooch may not seem like the most appetising thing in the world, it could save their life.

So where do you even start with this tricky task?

David Babington, a vet with The Pet Professionals , talks owners through administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event their dog has collapsed and isn't breathing.

As with first aid on a human, you need to follow the 'Staying Alive' pattern (The Pet Professionals)

On the site's YouTube channel, we see David using Jerry the CPR dog as a canine substitute for the Resusci Anne doll we all remember fondly.

David starts by showing where we should look for a pulse on a dog, then looking for a heartbeat.

Take a deep breath, and then try your best (The Pet Professionals)

A dog's heart can be located just behind their front left elbow, and if no heartbeat can be detected, David advises using chest compressions initially.

Resusci Jerry is quite a large model, so for smaller dogs, David advises using less pressure, and also massaging their chest by squeezing both sides of it together.

The good news is, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation actually involved breathing into the dog's nostrils while holding their mouth shut.

Because while we may love our dogs, they don't always have the mintiest breath.
