How to rent posh designer clothes including Chanel and Gucci for a fraction of the retail price

Now that restrictions across Scotland have moved to Level Zero and the number of people permitted to gather indoors and out has increased, there has never been a better excuse to get glammed up and make the most of it.

Coupled with the long hours of glorious sunshine, this is also the busiest time of year in the wedding calendar, even more so now that restrictions on the number of attendees has been relaxed.

But before you go splurging on a new summer dress or some killer heels, Money Saving Expert has shared a fabulous way to hire designer clothes for a fraction of the price.

In the latest edition of the MoneySavingExpert.com newsletter, Jenny Keefe wrote: “Clothing rental sites let you hire designer garments - typically for one day to a week - from their own stock or people’s private wardrobes for much less than the retail price - in some cases up to 95% less.”

How does it work?

It’s much easier than you probably imagine. You simply sign up, browse the clothes and then book. The company or owner posts it out to you, and you post it back when your hire period is over.

Designers spotted include Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Gucci, Ted Baker and more.

Here are some examples of the rental prices (fees included) MSE found:

  • Jimmy Choo heels - £16.50 for one day's rental (retail price £345)
  • Erdem - £11.50 for one day (retail £300)
  • Chanel blazer - £154 for three days (retail £3,500)
  • Gucci men's shoes - £30 for three days (retail £450)
  • Ted Baker dress - £29 for four days (retail £180)

Renting designer duds offers an affordable way to dress in luxury clothing for less, so it’s definitely worth considering - especially if you’re on the guest list of a few summer weddings.

Where can I rent designer clothes?

Money Saving Expert recommends three websites to check out:

  • By Rotation - offers the biggest selection and cheap prices, but shorter rental periods
  • Hurr - good selection, offers refunds if an item doesn't fit but is slightly more expensive
  • Front Row - more expensive but carries high-end designer items from Chanel and Gucci
