How to register to vote in the December General Election as deadline looms

Britain is getting ready to head to the polls once again in 2019.

A General Election will take place again on December 12 - with members of the public once again being asked to vote for the MP they want to represent them in the House of Commons.

But there's still time to have your voice heard as the deadline isn't until November 26 to register to vote.

You'll need to be on the electoral register in order to cast your vote, and you only need to register once.

However if you have moved house, or changed your name or nationality since first registering, you'll need to re-do it.

How to register

To register onto the Electoral Register, you can do so here.

The deadline for the December 12 General Election is midnight on November 26.

If you want to apply to vote by post, you must register before 5pm on November 26.

You can apply here.

Someone can vote on your behalf on Dec 12 if you're away (PA)

How to vote by proxy

If you know you'll be unavailable on December 12 to vote in person, you can ask someone to vote for you on your behalf.

You can apply for a proxy vote via a paper form which will need to be sent to your local Electoral Registration Office.

The deadline for this is 5pm on December 4.

Apply here.

How to vote if you're moving or living abroad

You can apply to vote by post or by proxy if eligible, and you can do this by filling in and posting either form.

Or you can register as an overseas voter - where you’ll need your passport details if you’re a British citizen living abroad.

For students

If you're a student, you can register to vote at both your home and term-time address. But you can't vote twice.
