How to register to vote in the council elections before the deadline - you've only got days to play your part

You could be forgiven for thinking that Brexit is the only political issue around at present - but you would be mistaken.

In 28 days time, hundreds of people across our region will be hoping that your votes can take them into positions of power within local authorities across the region.

Local councils are a hugely important and influential part of our democratic system.

They have key responsibilities for many areas that affect our day-to-day lives - ranging from waste collection to social services and from fixing the roads to how much tax we pay.

At this feverish time in the politics of our country, it is more important than ever that people pay attention to what is taking place in their local area - and take part in the democratic process surrounding it.

There is still time to register to vote in next month's local council elections - but not much of it.

It is very easy to do.

You can register by clicking here and clicking on the Start Now tab, the process should take about five minutes in total.

What you will need

You will be asked for your National Insurance number or your passport if you are a British citizen living abroad.

Do I need to register again?
