How to pronounce Alba correctly, the name of Alex Salmond's new political party

Alex Salmond launched his new Alba political party last week but as soon as he announced the name many people were confused as to how to pronounce it.

Social media was awash with people from across Scotland correcting the former First Minister for saying the name of his new party incorrectly.

Alba is the Scottish Gaelic word for Scotland, however you don't say it the way it is written.

Instead it is pronounced 'Al-a-buh'.

The word 'Alba' is Gaelic, therefore speakers of the language say it should be said in their tongue.

After Salmond and representatives from his new party kept saying 'Al-ba' over and over again it led to people taking to Twitter in outrage at the lack of knowledge of how to say it correctly.

Current SNP MP Pete Wishart took to the social media platform to say: "Why can't any of them pronounce Alba properly? I'll put a song up for them later......"

Donald Cameron, Tory candidate for Argyll & Bute, wrote: "Can everyone please make sure they pronounce Alba correctly?"

While, @dec_king said: "Cannae even pronounce Alba right, bodes well."

Gordon Maloney went a bit further. He wrote on Twitter: "It is pronounced 'al-ah-ba', not 'al-ba'. It is pronounced 'gah-lik', not 'gay-lik'.

"I can't believe I have to say it, but BBC Alba is named after the country, not the other way around this has been a public service announcement from coimhearsnachd a tha glè, glè sgìth."
