Borderlands 4, available on PC and consoles, features a co-op system that allows players to choose between highly fun and enriching experiences.
Not only can you invite up to three of your friends to play together, but you can also take advantage of crossplay (to bypass any platform restrictions). Let's look at setting up a lobby with your buddies to explore the world together.
How to invite your friends to Borderlands 4?
Crossplay lets you play Borderlands 4 with your friends on the same or different platforms. This guide will mostly be about playing with your buddies on Steam, but the extra step to invite someone from the console isn't very elaborate. It requires a few additional steps, which I have discussed later.
- To play with your friends, you must add them on Steam (or your PlayStation/Xbox account if you're on console).
- When you're inside a game, pause the game (also works from the main menu).
- You'll view all your online friends on the top-right part of your screen.
- You can click on a name and invite them to join your lobby.
- Once they have joined, you'll have to select the mode. The mode can be chosen only by the person hosting the session.
- As of writing, the campaign is the only option for you and your buddies. More options will unlock later during the weekend, allowing you to explore content outside the campaign.

If you're willing to play with your buddies across different platforms, the extra step is to turn on crossplay.
How to enable crossplay in Borderlands 4?
Crossplay comes in two types.
- Personal: This basic crossplay enables players on other platforms to join your session.
- Party: This helps to highlight a party member who has their crossplay turned off.
Both settings remain enabled by default, but you can tweak them from Session Settings. If you're playing with people on the same platform, you can turn on crossplay if you want (no harm in keeping it on as well).
