Sloclap, the studio behind Sifu and Absolver, is back with a completely different game, Rematch, a football title that is equal parts arcadey goodness and mechanically dense. Like any good football game, the fundamentals have to feel perfect, which is why getting comfortable with passing is key.
Here’s how you can pass the ball in Rematch and master the different ways to position it toward your teammates and past your opponents.
Passing in Rematch explained
Passing in Rematch is a basic mechanic that has a bit more depth than you might think. There are a few ways to pass the ball, but it’s tied to your X/Square button on the controller and right click on your mouse.
Passing is different from shooting because you’re essentially tapping the pass button while moving the left stick to aim it around you with a 360-degree coverage. You can also hold the button to add a bit more force to your pass.
There are a few types of passes you can perform in Rematch, and I’ll go over each.
Ground Pass
This is your basic pass when you have control over the ball and the pass occurs on the ground level, meaning it isn’t being lifted up. Move your left thumbstick in the direction you want to pass the ball in and press X / Square to perform the pass. You can increase the force applied by holding the button instead.

Volley Ground Pass
If you aren’t controlling the ball, and it is either passed to you or shot in your general direction, you can tap the pass button when it gets in close proximity to perform a volley ground pass.

This is pretty useful if you can pass the ball to someone closer to the goal, or in a better position than you, without actively controlling the ball.
Lob
Finally, you can perform a lob by pressing RB /R1 and X / Square.

This allows you to lift the ball and pass it over your opponent, so that they can’t interrupt the pass. This is the trickiest one to nail because you have to plan it a bit ahead, before your opponent is just far enough.

When to use each pass type in Rematch
In summary, here is when you should use each type of pass:
- Ground pass: When you have control of the ball and want to pass it around to a teammate.
- Volley ground pass: If a ball is shot, passed, or thrown in your direction, you want to move it to a teammate who is in a better position.
- Lob: When an opponent is close to you, but not too close, and you want to pass the ball behind them to a teammate.

How to practice passing in Rematch
If you want to get better at passing, you can always practice in the Freeplay without any pressure, or visit the tutorial section of Rematch and use the dedicated tutorial for passing and its specific challenges.
- Freeplay can be accessed from the main menu by pressing B/Circle on the controller.

- Tutorials for passing can be accessed from the Practice menu.

Overall, Rematch gives you a lot of control over your movement and how you move around the ball during a match. I highly encourage players to learn passing, because you can’t just shoot the ball and expect your teammates to react appropriately.
