What is Twitch’s generative AI training setting?
The Training for Generative AI setting allows Amazon to use content from your channel to train generative AI models, which Twitch defines as systems capable of generating or synthesizing new text, audio, images, or video. Eligible content includes streams, VODs, clips, chat messages, and images or text associated with your channel.
This is separate from the features that already use machine learning, like recommendations, AutoMod, and automatic captions. The setting only controls whether your content can be used as training data for Amazon’s generative models, not whether AI-powered features can work on Twitch at all.
The disturbing part for streamers is that the setting is enabled by default. Leave it untouched, and Twitch allows Amazon to use eligible channel content for generative AI training; turn it off, and your channel is opted out of future training.
How to opt out of Twitch generative AI training
You can disable the setting directly from your Twitch account:
- Sign in to Twitch.
- Click your profile picture and open Settings.
- Select Security and Privacy.
- Scroll down to Training for Generative AI.
- Turn the setting off.
Once disabled, your channel content will no longer be used for future training of Amazon models designed to generate or synthesize text, audio, images, or video.
The setting applies to streams, VODs, clips, stream chats, and pictures and text posted on your channel. Twitch specifically says future model training, so turning it off shouldn’t be treated as a way to remove content that may have already been used to train an existing model.
Does opting out disable all AI on Twitch?
Turning the setting off doesn’t stop Twitch and Amazon from using your content for every AI or machine-learning feature. AutoMod, recommendations, automatic captions, and various tools connected to streamer growth and monetization can all keep working, as those are separate from training generative models that create new text, images, audio, or video.
Your setting also only covers content associated with your own channel. If you chat in someone else’s stream, it’s that channel owner’s preference that decides whether the chat can be included in generative AI training, not yours.
Why is Twitch generative AI training enabled by default?
The opt-out system drew immediate criticism, since Twitch enabled AI training rather than asking creators to opt in. During Twitch’s Patch Notes stream, chief product officer Mike Minton gave a fairly direct explanation: making it opt-in would mean very few people would choose to participate. That’s at least an honest answer.
Amazon had already experimented with Twitch content before the setting existed, as Minton said in 2024 that the company had used Twitch data for AI work in a prototyping capacity. The new setting now gives creators an explicit way to exclude their channel from future generative model training.
