How to nominate your street for an electric vehicle charging point

Motorists are being asked to nominate locations across North Somerset for the installation of electric vehicle charging points.

To support the transition to low and zero-emission vehicles, councils in the West of England launched their public EV charging network called Revive, as part of the Go Ultra Low West project, funded by the Office for Zero Emissions Vehicles.

North Somerset Council is now inviting residents who cannot charge at home to submit their ideas for future charger locations by March 31.

The ideas for locations will be used to help the council map local demand, needs and aspirations and help strengthen future funding bids.

The council would particularly like suggestions for charge points in residential locations. In the meantime, central government continues to offer grant support for individual home charge points.

There are currently 150 public charging bays being developed across the West of England as part of the Revive network, but more are needed as EV use increases ahead of the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

The council is currently drawing up its electric vehicle strategy to help it reach its goals to tackle climate change.

North Somerset Council executive member for climate emergency and environment Councillor Bridget Petty said: “Owning an electric car is one way to reduce your carbon emissions and still have the freedom to get around but I know many residents don’t have the option while they have nowhere to charge it near home.

"This initiative is a great way to understand the potential needs from our towns and villages. We’re committed to supporting our residents to make greener choices to help the region hit its carbon reduction targets.

"Nominating your own street or neighbourhood as somewhere EV charge points are needed sends a clear sign that you’re also committed to this goal.

"We hope that, through proving demand, we succeed in future funding bids and are able to deliver as many schemes as possible.”

So far the project has installed a total of 26 publicly accessible charging bays across North Somerset, with an additional five ‘rapid’ and nine ‘fast’ charging points under development.

In addition, the Portishead Marina Rapid Charging Hub, complete with an array of solar panels, will open later in the spring, with two rapid charging points serving four charging bays.
