How to maximise your time off work in 2022 using bank holiday hack

Who wouldn't want to maximise their days off work throughout the year?

Luckily, there is a way to do this using the bank holidays throughout the year to stretch out that well-deserved time off.

Assuming you work a Monday to Friday shift pattern, April or June is your best bet for a longer break using less annual leave.

Of course, you won’t be the only one to have it – so make sure to get in there quick.

Next year gives us Scots a total of 11 bank holidays, with an extra day thrown in to celebrate The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Here are all 2022's bank holidays and the best days off to book in if you want to bag yourself a nice long weekend or an extra break away without eating away at all your holiday entitlement.

When are the bank holidays in 2022?

  • Monday, January 3

  • Tuesday, January 4

  • Friday, April 15: Good Friday

  • Monday, April 18: Easter Monday

  • Monday, May 2

  • Thursday, June 2

  • Friday, June 3: Platinum Jubilee

  • Monday, August 29

  • Wednesday, November 30: St Andrew’s Day

  • Monday, December 26: Boxing Day

  • Tuesday, December 27

How to maximise your days off using bank holidays in 2022

Us Scots have some extra bank holidays to play with compared to our neighbours around the UK.

With two bank holiday days to start off the year on January 3 and 4, booking just three days of annual leave during the first week in January will extend your Christmas break by a whole five days (including the weekend).

Taking January 5, 6, 7 off as annual leave would secure you that extra time off.

However, it might be a little late to bag those last-minute holidays - it is worth keeping in mind for next year!

But do not fret, there are plenty more opportunities to maximise your days off throughout the year...

Saturday, April 9 to Monday, April 18

Four days annual leave, bookended by weekends and the Easter bank holidays, will net you 10 consecutive days off.

Dates to book: April 11, 12, 13 and 14.

Saturday, April 9 to Sunday, April 24

Eight days annual leave, plus the Easter bank holidays, will bag you 16 consecutive days off.
