skate. has a ton of interesting new features, and the most absurd one is probably the Assassin’s Creed/Just Cause-style climbing system. There’s definitely a lot of weird new mechanics in this game, but they also added a host of simpler tricks to balance out the chaos. We already covered Wallies as an interesting new mechanic, and today we’ll be teaching you how to master slappies in skate.
Neither of these tricks is particularly crazy or over the top, but they are good for chaining combos and starting satisfying lines. Slappies are particularly good for transitioning into grinds. Here’s how it works:
How To Perform A Slappy In Skate

Slappies are an easy trick in real life that skateboarders often implement into their sessions. It’s a type of grind where you don’t have to ollie to get onto a curb or any other obstacle. You approach the obstacle with speed and at a certain angle, and slap the trucks against the curb. Finally, you lift the board and slide into a grind.
Here’s how to do it in skate.:
- Start skating next to any curb with a minimal amount of speed
- Angle yourself in a way that the front of your board is facing the curb
- Do not press any buttons, and your skater will automatically start grinding the curb.
- To stop, flick the left analog stick in the opposite direction of the curb
- You can also press B (Xbox) or Circle (PlayStation) to get off the curb.
Yeah, that’s all there is to it when it comes to slappies. It’s arguably the easiest mechanic in the game.
Mastering Slappies In Skate
While there’s not much involved in actually “mastering” a simple slappy, there are a lot of slappy variations that you can implement to make them more complex. The setup for these variations is the same as the regular slappy, but they just require different inputs right as you approach the curb.
- 5-0: Right before your board directly touches the curb, hold down the right stick.
- Nosegrind: Hold up on the right stick to do a Nosegrind.
- Lipslide: Hold the right stick in the opposite direction of the curb. If the curb is on your right, hold left.
- Boardslide: Opposite of Lipslide. Hold the right stick in the direction of the curb. If the curb is on your right, hold right.
That’s everything you need to know about slappies. If you want to consistently get good at them, try doing them in a place with minimal traffic. And if you’re looking for more general tips, check out our guides on better flick it controls and settings.
