How to make your own hand sanitiser at home using just three simple ingredients

It’s been flying off supermarket shelves as coronavirus spreads and sickeningly, there are also reports it’s being stolen from hospital wards.

But if you’re struggling to get hold of hand sanitiser, the good news is it’s actually pretty simple to make at home, the Daily Post reports.

Most shops and pharmacies are now imposing limits on this potentially life-saving product, amid stock shortages resulting from the global health pandemic.

But with this simple recipe you can carry on following government advice to wash your hands regularly, with either soap or water or an alcohol-based rub.

Which underlying conditions put you at more risk with COVID-19?

It uses just three ingredients - making it easy for you to mix up your own version at home.

According to the Daily Post, this is what you’ll need:

  • 3/4 cup of isopropyl or rubbing alcohol (99 percent) - this can be found in health and beauty retailers like Boots or Superdrug.
  • 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel (to help keep your hands smooth and to counteract the harshness of alcohol) - can be found in supermarkets and health and beauty retailers.
  • 10 drops of essential oil, such as lavender oil, or you can use lemon juice instead - can be found in supermarkets and health and beauty retailers.

And here’s the method:

  • Pour all ingredients into a bowl, ideally one with a pouring spout like a glass measuring container.
  • Mix with a spoon and then beat with a whisk to turn the sanitizer into a gel.
  • Pour the ingredients into an empty bottle for easy use, and label it “hand sanitizer.”
