How to make a fire in Sons of the Forest

From cooking food to staying warm, fire is essential to surviving on a cursed island in Sons of the Forest. Be warned, though, as while in many games fires are meant to keep you safe, it’s not exactly the same in Sons of the Forest.

Here’s how to make a fire in Sons of the Forest, including multiple campfire types.

To make a fire, you need sticks and a lighter. Sticks are scattered on the ground for you to pick up, or you can chop down smaller trees using the axe. Equip the stick in your hand and break it down for the fire (cycle through placement types if needed). You can add another stick or light the fire up with the lighter.

The basic fire doesn’t last long, so here are a couple of ways to make it better:

  • Use firewood: Add two halves of the smallest log piece to the fire.
  • Build a reinforced fire: Surround the campfire with stones.

As the fire is burning, you can add more firewood, leaves, and whatever else you have in your inventory. Using firewood is a must-have, especially when cooking meals. Reinforcing the campfire doesn’t make it last longer, but it becomes easier to spot and maintain. Stones also ensure you (or anyone else) don’t accidentally break the fire.

fires attract locals:

Fires attract cannibals and mutants, so make sure you’re in a safe spot or are ready to fight in case they show up.

Use the fire to cook food with or without the cooking pot and to stay warm during the winter. It also greatly increases visibility during the night.

A different type of fire you can build in Sons of the Forest is the bonfire. The main difference is that you can’t cook at it – a bonfire is mainly to stay warm and light up the area. It’s especially handy during the winter, when you need to always have a fire nearby for maximum efficiency.

Building a bonfire is similar to building a campfire. Start by breaking two sticks, then add two pieces of firewood, reinforce it (optional), and then add up to six logs on top of it. You can add less, depending on how big you want the bonfire to be.

Apart from the bonfire, you can also build different lamps and torches to keep your base well-lit. Naturally, larger fires have a higher chance of attracting locals, and you might have to clear nearby camps to ensure peace and quiet.
