How to lockpick in Mouse P.I. For Hire – Tailpicking guide

One of the earliest minigames in Mouse P.I. For Hire involves cracking open the safes that you'll find on your adventures. Known as Tailpicking, the minigame allows you to get whatever you can find inside these safes. However, lockpicking here works pretty differently from other video games, and this guide will help you to master the concepts.

How does Tailpicking work in Mouse P.I. For Hire

To open safes in Mouse P.I. For Hire, you'll need to draw a path (of sorts) through the lock while keeping track of the rhythm.

  • When you open a lock (refer to the image below), you'll have two points (one on the left and one on the right).
  • You'll have to draw the path through the gaps until it reaches the other end of the lock.
  • The lock will also have walls that you'll need to mind when drawing the path to reach the end.

You'll also find nodes called tumblers all around the lock. These points will be visible as you move the path forward towards the end of the lock. These are checkpoints that will require active inputs for your path to pass through them clean.

  • To draw your path, use your WASD buttons on your PC. The path moves in the direction based on your inputs.
  • You'll also have to send the tumblers back to their original place.
  • To do so, just touch the tip of the tumblers. They will then get pushed back, clearing a space for you to draw the path.
  • When you send a tumbler back to its original position, it will clear the path in front of you.

At first, the Tailpicking minigames will be rather simple. The more you progress, the more complex the puzzles will become. After a certain point, you'll get locks with multiple branches (with only one of them being correct) and thorns.

Thorns are really difficult to navigate around. If you touch a thorn, you'll need to start all over. However, you can use the undo button to reverse your moves. You can do so as many times as required. But if you touch a thorn, your progression will be erased, and you'll need to begin from the start.

It's important to open as many safes as possible. You'll mostly find money from them, but they might also offer other valuables, including Schematics that allow you to upgrade your weapons.
