How to listen back to Christy Dignam's 'heartbreaking' interview with Ryan Tubridy in full

Listeners were in tears this week after a “heartbreaking” interview between Aslan frontman Christy Dignam and RTÉ presenter Ryan Tubridy on his radio show.

On Monday morning, Christy gave what he believes may be his final ever interview on the Late Late Show host's RTE Radio 1 show after he entered into palliative care following a diagnosis of amyloidosis, a rare form of blood cancer.

During the interview, Ryan visited Christy in his home where the pair chatted about Aslan, life, love and death.

Throughout the interview, Christy stated that there were times when he was overcome with feelings of fear, as "nobody wants to die".

He said, as quoted by RSVP Live: "When I first got diagnosed, I remember praying, I was like 'please, just give me 10 more years.'

"And that 10 years are up now and you're kind of saying, 'I know I only asked for 10 but you couldn’t throw another 10 in there could you?"

He added that he views palliative care as a "conveyor belt up to heaven".

Turning spiritual, the Dublin singer added: "I believe we are all spiritual beings in some sense or other. I remember there used to be an old saying… that 'religion is for people who want to go to heaven, spirituality is for people who have been to hell.'

"I really identified with that because when you have had rough times, the contrast is so vast that it helps you see the world in a more focused way."

The interview was broadcast live on The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 at 9am on Monday, if you want to listen back to the “heartbreaking” interview, head over to the radio section on RTÉ’s website and search for The Ryan Tubridy Show, scrolling back to Monday’s episode.
